Horrible customer service. Switched from BCBS Basic to FSBP for massage and chiropratic benefits. Calls to customer service usually have me on hold for greater than one hour. While they you the option to have them call you back, anytime I've done this, they usually call, my phone rings once, then they hang up, not even giving you a chnace to answer. Never again. Will be switvhing back to BCBS, even if they are more expensive. The easy to get hold of customer service is worth it.

Awful. I need an MRI of my back and I am in excruciating pain. I was denied an MRI on November 5th.. They want my Dr. to complete a peer review. My doctor is trying to get through but with no success. I think it is terrible and dehumanizing that a doctor from an insurance company who does not know my medical history has to review the work of an another doctor who knows my history and has been working with me. I still do not have authorization for an MRI. Shameful!
Update - the peer doctor did not agree with my doctor. Consequently, the insurance said I would need to wait 6 months to submit again. I am glad this happened during open season for the government. I am going back to BCBS. Buyer beware.

I was very happy initially with this insurance, but in 2024 it has gone down drastically, specifically for asthma coverage. I have had doctor prescribed asthma medicine denied and the most recent issue is my daughter needs new nebulizer tubing and a mask as she broke hers or it degraded over time. The insurance denied the coverage at CVS. It is priced at $33.00!! I called to ask why and was referred to preferred medical equipment providers. The equipment provider service was ghetto. The lady who answered as the operator sounded like she was driving on the freeway and the office she transferred me to said I needed a prescription for a mask and tubing and they couldn’t just sell me the replacement masks. I just opted to pay the $33.00 to avoid further headache and get my daughter’s need met more timely than the hoops of the insurance company. The whole process is trash and needs to be streamlined. After this year, we will not be re-enrolling during open season. I’m trying to make sure my daughter can breathe and survives and they have me calling and running around the world. It’s the worst insurance experience I have ever experienced in my lifetime.

We have been members for almost 30 years and I am so grateful that as the world has gotten more complicated, we can always count on the staff of the AFSBP to listen, answer our questions, act on our concerns and to treat us with the utmost professionalism. Recently over a weekend I noticed I needed more of a Specialty medication prior to a trip. I was frantic and decided that I was going to try to reach someone at the AFSPB by sending a private message to the Facebook account. Within the hour, I received a response and staff from the highest level got busy and took care of my issue for me. That is only one of the many times, I've had the staff take my needs seriously and helped me over a hurdle. I wouldn't switch providers under any circumstances. Thank you AFSBP for being the best in the business1

I’ve been a member for decades and experienced their rapid decline in recent years. High numbers of denials of anything expensive, including overseas. Terrible customer service. Not uncommon to wait on hold for 30+ minutes to get a different story each time you call (at your long distance expense). They tell you they’ll get back to you and don’t. Aetna seems to be the big dog wagging the little AFSPA tail. It shouldn’t be this way. Also DOD and DHS should never have been allowed to join the FSBP. This has really hurt customer service. I saw something on the web about the FSBP having among the highest claim denial appeal rates in the FEHB program. I tried to verify this but couldn’t. It’s really sad for folks like me overseas who had come to feel comfortable knowing they had our back, pride even. Not now. They don’t have your back. Don’t let the massage and other gimmicks fool you. You could end up out many thousands of dollars having spent countless hours dealing with it.
